DIY Painted Fabric Art

There are very few things that make me as happy as a successful DIY project (especially when it’s home decor), and this weekend was the perfect time to make these framed painted fabric pieces. From start to finish, this project took under 30 minutes, and all the supplies (frames included) cost less than $25.

Living proof that art doesn’t have to be expensive – especially when you make your own. 🙂

What you’ll need:

White linen fabric

Fabric paint (I used Jacquard in black)

A foam brush (I used a 1″ for both prints)

This idea was actually inspired by this Framed Block Print Fabric Art (seriously, how cute is this?) and my original plan was to purchase a fun texture stamp to use. Unfortunately I could not find a stamp anywhere in town (downside of living in a small area), so I decided I was going to try free-handing it with these foam brushes. 

I chose linen because of the thick texture and because it absorbs paint fast and dries really quick. I bought a yard which worked out great – I had plenty of room to try the brushes and see what worked. For the first one, I made light brush strokes in random places (which came out looking really messy), and for the second one I made curved strokes on top of one another. I thought I did a horrible job at first, but when a small portion is cut and put behind a frame, it looks so much better! When I decided what part I wanted framed, I cut it out and taped it to the inside of the frame to help keep it in place.

Voila! Easy and affordable art. I would still like to order a stamp and try something different next time – it’s so easy to be creative with these types of projects!
